Bisphosphonates in Horses

Although not recommended for use in young horses, there are reports of bisphosphonate administration in young racehorses. Dr. Heather Knych discusses the long-term effects of such use. Dr. Knych, a professor at UC Davis, received both her DVM & PhD from the school and is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology. She heads the equine pharmacology section at the UC Davis/Maddy Lab and has published extensively on the pharmacokinetics of drugs important or of concern to horse racing.
