Understanding Shoulder Fractures

Dr. Susan Stover discusses fractures of the humerus, commonly referred to as shoulder fractures at the racetrack. Dr. Alina Vale discusses findings from the post-mortem reviews conducted the last year with trainers and veterinarians with humeral fracture cases.

Dr. Susan Stover is a Professor in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Stover received her DVM from Washington State University and her PhD from University of California, Davis. She is board certified by American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Stover is an internationally recognized expert on racehorse injuries and has published over 200 scientific articles primarily concerning bone pathology and racing injuries related to the California Horse Racing Board’s necropsy program. This last spring, Dr. Stover was appointed to the HISA Board and chairperson of the HISA Racetrack Safety Standing Committee.

Dr. Alina Vale is the CHRB official veterinarian assigned to conduct post-mortem reviews with trainers and veterinarians. Dr. Vale received her DVM from the University of California, Davis, and  a Master's Degree in Forensic Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida. She is a consultant to the BHA reviewing post-mortem exams and chairs the AAEP Welfare & Public Policy Advisory Council.
