Dr. Camie Heleski leads a discussion on why horse racing has been the subject of aggressive criticism in recent years - what is driving this criticism, and why do critics matter? Joining the discussion as a panelist is Dr. Jennifer Durenberger, currently The Jockey Club steward at NYRA tracks. Dr. Heleski received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in Animal Science with an emphasis in equine behavior and welfare. She is currently a lecturer at the University of Kentucky in the Equine Science and Management Program, where she teaches classes on equine courses and multi-species animal behavior & welfare. Her applied research interests revolve around equine behavior and welfare, horse-human interactions, racehorse welfare issues, and working equids in developing regions of the world.  She recently published the article Thoroughbred Racehorse Welfare through the Lens of ‘Social License to Operate—With an Emphasis on a U.S. Perspective in the Journal of Sustainability.
