Early Bone Lesion Detection

Dr. Shannon Hinton and Dr. John Pigott provide a presentation on the bone lesions that can lead to fractures, and knowing when to stop to help optimize future soundness and performance. PET, CT, MRI and treatment options are also covered.

About the speakers:

Dr. Shannon Hinton is an associate surgeon and director of medical services at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga. She received her DVM degree from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014 and completed her large animal surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center in 2019. Dr. Hinton has been involved with horses since a young age. Her family bred and raised Quarter Horses and she grew up riding and showing, primary in western events. Her professional interests include orthopedics, upper airway surgery, lameness and advanced imaging.

Dr. John Pigott is the chief surgeon and hospital director at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists (CRES) across from Belmont.  He completed his equine surgery residency training at The Ohio State University and has performed research in equine orthopedics, regenerative medicine and upper airway disorders.  Dr. Pigott joined the team at CRES in 2016 and has notable expertise in orthopedic surgery, upper airway surgery, complicated lameness, and advanced imaging.  He has an extensive history as a competitor in the hunter/jumper field, and utilizes this unique knowledge daily as he approaches cases across disciplines.  As a recognized specialist, Dr. Pigott is an invited speaker at both national and international conferences on the topics of orthopedics, regenerative medicine, lameness and poor performance.  Dr. Pigott's current research is focused on Thoroughbred breakdown prevention and early screening techniques.
